Ann and LInda (fellow 2013 riders) were completing their ride in from Key West today. Marilyn, Mel and I were going to ride out to meet them. Alas, I had a flat about 4km from the hotel. By then the route was deteriorating and the weather was moving in, so we did a few laps of the nearby state park and called it a day. The flat was probably operator error (pinch flat), so I'm hoping that's my one for the tour! For old times' sake we took a picture of the '13 "wolf pack". Ann and I will be riding the Atlantic Coast. Linda and Mel will wave farewell to us on Wednesday.
There really isn't much good riding in the immediate vicinity, so I don't feel the need to go out for any more rides before we head out of town. We have our first official meeting with the guides tomorrow, a banquet tomorrow evening and our official departure on Wednesday morning. Let's hope the forecast improves. Last night it called for 40mm of rain on Wed.
Yesterday (Sunday) Lesley and I drove to Key West. A lot of driving (about 8-9 hours), but worth the quick visit. Time to pose at the southern-most point of the US, wander the historic parts of town, sample the local delicacies (conch fritters, Cuban sandwich, black bean soup & key lime tart). I loved the drive - great ocean views, lots of bridges and cute pockets of civilization.
On Saturday Lesley, Nancy I. and I rode the local water taxi. "Taxi" is a bit of a misnomer. It is primarily a tour boat plying the intercoastal waterway and providing a running commentary of the mansions and yachts of the rich and famous. I'm not sure there is such a concentration of excess elsewhere in North America.
Let the fun begin...!
ReplyDeleteChecking AccuWeather, it is only calling for 17mm of rain in scattered showers. Hope the outlook improves for you. All the best setting off!!
