Another State Down......

Another glorious day for riding.  Temps 16C to about 24C (although it warmed up later in the day).  Little to no wind.  Mostly sunny with a few passing clouds.  Very, very quiet roads.  Beautiful agricultural land.  There doesn't appear to be any irrigation equipment in evidence.  We passed near quite a bit of swampland today (mostly out of sight), so maybe the ground is just naturally saturated and doesn't need irrigation.  Not sure who names these things, but one area was named the "Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge".  We're on the outskirts of Suffolk, VA tonight, having passed from North Carolina into Virginia at about mile 44.  I don't complain too much usually, but we're staying in an out-of-the-way Motel 6 and a group of us rode an extra 7 miles round trip to get some lunch after riding a route that had no services all day.  When we got to the restaurant there was a Holiday Inn Express in the parking lot of a group of restaurants.  Perhaps a better choice of lodging?  Anyway - no chance of me fading away.....  Interesting fact about Suffolk.  It is an "independent city" which means it is not in a county and its area is huge.  We were in the "City of Suffolk" as soon as we crossed the state line, yet were 20 miles away from our lodging and even further away from the commercial part of town. All in all, though, a really great day.

Another huge field (field was 2 to 3 times the size captured by this photo) of solar panels.  It would be interesting to see the economics.

Our second SAG stop had character.....

A pretty church along the way.

Leaving NC

Into Virginia

Interesting little flying machines.

A bit of Virginia scenery..

Stats for the day:
116 km from Elizabeth City NC to Suffolk VA. About 1000 feet up and 1000 feet down.  Nice temps, nice sun, nice wind.  Pretty sweet day.......  Margaritas tonight :)

  1. Another one biters the dust... Congrats on another state done.

Now that you're in Virginia, will you get to see Williamsburg? It is a marvel! We spent 2 days there in 1984 and could have spent more time looking around the town. My Dad took some MBA courses at the College of William and Mary there when I was a kid, and that whet my appetite to see it for myself. If you get a chance, I recommend taking some time to look around. If not, you'll definitely have to go back and take it in.

    1. Yes, that's our destination and a rest day the following day. We'll see Jamestown on the way in to Williamsburg.
