Well, That Was Easy.....

A beautiful and easy ride today.  Lovely rural, quiet roads, comfortable temps, little wind, low mileage, few hills.  What more could we ask for?

It was a pretty ride today, but not a lot to look at.  Mostly forests and farmland, with some rural properties thrown in.  Oh yes - a few dogs as well but all seemed pretty friendly.  Hard to judge sometimes, though, as they come bounding out of the yard towards your heels!  Argh!

Turns out we were one week early for the Glennville Sweet Onion Festival.  Lots of onions in the fields, though.

Each of the boxes in the field is chock full of onions.

I don't usually ride in a group, but I just happened to come upon 2 other groups of 2, so there were five of us in close proximity for a while.  Two in front, one in the middle, 2 at the back (one of which was me).  The middle person decided to take sudden evasive action at the sight of rumble strips.  I've never seen disc brakes in action, but she stopped on a dime.  She left rubber skid marks on the pavement as the back end of her bike swung out 90 degrees to the left.  I swung left, as did the person on my right.  Somehow we both made it around her.  The middle person was still clipped in, so she twisted her feet hard to release the pedals.  So hard, in fact, that she broke two spokes and the brakes remained seized.  A bit of excitement for the day!  Everyone was unhurt, but the middle bike had to be taken to the shop for repairs.  Still, I apparently hadn't learned my lesson and followed some of the group to the next corner and a wrong turn.  Oh well, a few extra miles on such a nice day was no hardship.  I then resumed riding on my own for the rest of the day.

Oh - and I felt right at home.....  Canada Geese in the field.

As we were approaching Statesboro, we turned onto Country Club Road for about 8km.  Obviously a well-to-do part of town.  Thought I might do some real estate shopping along the way.

It was a short ride today.  Just 80km, and despite a later start, we were still in shortly after noon.  Our route was from Glennville GA to Statesboro GA.  Still not much in the way of hills.  Just 1100 feet up and pretty much the same down.

Our hotel is across the street from Georgia Southern University.  A few of us walked or cycled over there and took a look at their Wildlife Education and Raptor Centre.  Some pics below.

  1. Hello Cycling Trickster Sue :-)

It's obvious that skill plays a big part in cycling safety … manouvering in and around the crazy traffic, rumble strips, dogs, unexpected objects, bad road conditions … yikes, it's never ending! Love your photos … and what a nice surprise to see all of the beautiful raptors … a little connection to the Rockies.

Hiked Lady Mac yesterday … dodging ticks instead of dogs, rocks instead of rumble strips, hikers instead of vehicles, cold wind gusts/snow squalls instead of 28 degree temps … and beautiful white capped peaks against blue skies in contrast to the beauty that you are seeing.

Looking forward to future posts … you seem to be having a fantastic time! Keep on your petals :-)
