National Lawn Mowing Day

What?  You didn't know about that?  Neither did I, but it seemed that everyone was out mowing their lawn today.  Most were the ride-on variety zipping around large rural properties.  A few were the good ol' gas push mower.  Many weed-wackers cleaning out the ditches as well.  We transitioned today into much more agricultural fields.  Lots of grains, some corn and some fields with tiny just-sprouting crops of some type.  Some fields were being worked on to get ready for planting.  Just a beehive of activity out there.......  We also saw a few fields of this unidentified crop - green plant with purple flowers on top.

Forgot to mention an interesting section of fields we went by yesterday.  Huge fields of solar panels on both sides of the road......

It was a great day of riding, although that pesky headwind was a bit wearing after a while.  This was probably our least-traffic day thus far.  We were on very quiet roads all day.

At about 20 miles we had a 3.5 mile bridge to cross over Albemarle Sound.  Always fun to cycle across those.

Typical scenery today.

Went through the pretty little town of Hertford - lots of water around.

Destination tonight is Elizabeth City.  It is, among other things, home to the largest US Coast Guard Base in the US.  We're on the highway a bit out of town.  I try to go for a bit of a walk after getting in everyday, but "town" was a bit out of reach for me, so no pictures.

My commentary of encountering locals on my walks (often to a grocery store) the last few days has to do with how many relatively young people seem to be using motorized scooters to get around.  Also - just how many obese people are waddling from cars to store and back.  I know Canada has an obesity problem too, but I can't help but think that it's much worse in rural southern US.  I wonder just how many of these scooter-people could get some mobility back if they could shed some of the weight and try to get a bit more active.  Having said that, I don't seem to be losing any weight on this trip.  The food is just too good and plentiful!

Stats for the day:
92 km from Plymouth NC to Elizabeth City NC. Headwind all day. Still very flat. Fabulous temperatures for riding - 14C to 25C.  Mostly sunny with a bit of cloud. Great day!

  1. It seems that the purple field may be tobacco, but it doesn't look anything like the tobacco fields Rose Lynn saw in her youth in southern Ontario - they were pink, if any bloom was seen. Apparently blooms are usually taken off early so that the leaves develop better.

    1. Don't think it's tobacco. Looked on line and the flower is different.

  2. Hey, I was out mowing my back 40 on Little Diamond Island yesterday, too. I've gotten pretty good on a tractor mower!

  3. Not sure what your purple flowering plant is... Could be tobacco...

We're off to open the cottage tomorrow. Hope the weather cooperates. Have a nice 'long weekend' -- though it probably doesn't register with you, as every day is like a long weekend when you're on a trip.
